THE BREWSTER PROJECT

TIM and i were on our way up to LaHOMA's apartment to watch THE FAYE DUNAWAY SHOW, when we ran into JORDANA BREWSTER, the star of D.E.B.S. coming out of the building. i told her i had just seen her movie last night. she said "i can't believe RuPAUL is standing here telling me you saw my movie!" i said "anytime bitches are kicking ass in a movie, i'm so there!" we laughed and said goodbye, but what i didn't say was that i walked out of the film after a very painful first hour. she was fascinating to watch though, with her KATE JACKSON / DEMI MOORE good looks.

p.s.- i was very impressed that she knew my name.
p.s.s.- my server won't allow me to link her to IMDB.COM, right now.

I'VE GOT A RESURRECTION

i don't remember what RONNY and i did on wednesday or thursday, but i'm sure it had to do with exploring another facet of this amazing city. yoga, museums, the STATEN ISLAND FERRY, uptown, downtown, theatre, subways, CENTRAL PARK,..etc. this past week we did it all.

friday, about 10 of us had "game night" at LaHOMA's. it was the first time i'd ever played ASSASSIN.

sunday, we went to hear MARIANNE WILLIAMSON speak (an amazing easter/resurrection message), caught the train out to CONEY ISLAND (more like RUFFNECK THUG ISLAND) and then went to see the movie D.E.B.S. (we walked out after an hour of pure torture).

i told RONNY, as he left for the airport this morning, that he'll never be the same person after a seven day visit to MANHATTAN. he said "you're right, i feel like i've resurrected".

ISLAND FEVER

my friend RONNY lives in HONOLULU and is visiting NEW YORK CITY for the first time. RONNY truly couldn't have a better host than me, TRUST! we've been canvassing this island like nobody's business since his arrival on monday. the first stop we made was to a subway station so that he could get a METRO CARD with unlimited rides for the week that he's here.

i had been planning to take him to THE GAEITY, but sadly it closed, so i took him to see LA CAGE AUX FOLLES on BROADWAY. it was a fabulous introduction to THE GREAT WHITE WAY. i had never seen the show before and i clearly wasn't prepared for what we saw. the show was an all out, spectacular extravaganza! it was everything you would hope a big musical to be... big lavish numbers, gorgeous costumes, great songs, a timeless message, and drag queens! i has it all! we laughed, we cried, we were transported by the magic... i swear!

we were the guests of MICHAEL BENJAMIN WASHINGTON, the genius plays JACOB the butler/maid to the hilt with the biggest laughs of the show. everyone in the cast is absolutely terrific.

BROADWAY'S LONGEST (AND THICKEST) RUNNING SHOW

saturday night, we stayed at the JEFFERSON, which was the same hotel i was staying at on the night i found out my mother had died. that was back in 1993, after i had returned from performing at the GAY & LESBIAN MARCH on WASHINGTON. a bittersweet triumph.

this weekend, after performing at LULU'S in D.C., i got a call from ROURKE telling me of another death... THE GAIETY ALL-MALE BURLESQUE REVUE. that's right, the best show on B'WAY has closed it's doors after 30 years. i've been a patron for 20 of those years, and even got to perform there back in 1989 with LAHOMA, PERFIDIA, INTERNATIONAL CRISIS and RAMSES.

for the past five years, i expected the "GEM OF TIMES SQUARE" to close due to the new morality that has corrupted our country, but in the end, economics was it's demise. the building was sold to make room for another STARBUCKS, no doubt.

I LIKE TO DRESS UP

tuesday night, i met up with VOLTAGE at the JAZZ STANDARD to hear her brother in-law, JOHN O'GALLAGHER perform with his group. it was great being there and it made want to devote my life to jazz clubs, the only problem was that it also made me want to have several martinis and smoke a big fatty. the only time i really miss getting high is when i listen to jazz. i wore a shiny black PAUL SMITH suit, a black button down shirt with no tie, PRADA shoes and a DOLCE & GABBANA hat.

later, i met up with WITHERSPOON & ROURKE to see ARI GOLD perform at JOE'S PUB. ARI was amazing, a true showman. i've known of ARI'S outstanding talent for years, but my friends had no idea that they'd be so blown away. ARI asked me to introduce the show, which consisted of a full band and a plethora of special guests including the awesome ADAM JOSEPH and the great BILLY PORTER.

wednesday at 2 in the afternoon, i saw a preview of STEEL MAGNOLIAS on B'WAY. i was wearing a brown tweed MATTHEW BATANIAN suit and tie with a yellow ETRO shirt. then later that night, i finally got to meet TIM'S buddy from college, JAMES. we bonded while watching MOMMY DEAREST and even more so while dissecting the career of MARIAH CAREY.

TIM is coming to D.C. with us for my show at LULU'S this weekend. he went to college there, so he knows his way around.

MATHU ANDERSEN is confirmed for hair and make-up on the video for my new single WORKOUT... the truth is, i couldn't do it without him.

i just found out that WORKOUT is this week's number one breakout on the BILLBOARD DANCE CHART!!!

WHAT THEN BECOMES UNIQUE?

my EX- came up from MIAMI BEACH on friday to attend THE ARMORY, an annual art fair held at the piers on 51st & the WEST SIDE HIWAY. not only did GEORGES drag me along to all of the exhibits each day, but also to a dozen other galleries around the city. it was the second time i visited THE MUSEUM of MODERN ART in less than a month, only this time i did not bust into tears when i saw the work of my favorites... HENRI MATTISSE, WILLEM de KOONING, EGON SHIELE, PAUL CEZANNE and MARK ROTHKO.

saturday night, we somehow ended up at the NEW MUSEUM, which is currently running a show called EAST VILLAGE USA. the show features many artist from the 1980's, who's work exemplified the EAST VILLAGE back then in NEW YORK CITY. NELSON SULLIVAN was one such artist who's videography is on display at this gallery.

NELSON was also a very close personal friend of mine. (i'm having a hard time writing about this because the video showed so many of my old friends who are only with us in spirit and art). as i stood there and watched 21 year old footage of my friends and myself that i'd never seen before, my head started to spin as though i had just taken 5 hits of acid. afterward, i was emotionally shellshocked. i asked myself... had it really been that long? i try to keep focused on the now, but at times like that i have no defense.

sunday, we trekked out to QUEENS to see the exhibition at PS1. unfortunately, by then i had seen way too much art in a very short amount of time and everything there seemed way too obvious and very self-conscious. it made me wonder... in a room where everyone has figured out how to look unique/cool (therefore rendering everyone average) ... what then becomes unique? is it the way one thinks? or is it in not trying to BE anything at all?

WHY DID I LEAVE?

imagine being one of the passengers in a raggedy, old, beat up car that is being driven aimlessly, more or less, by nearsighted simpletons with no map.
my life is too precious. please, let me out at the far corner.

HMMM...

our culture hates effeminate men. from day one, we're all taught to distrust and put down boys who play with girls toys. just look at all the effeminate male villains in DISNEY animated films, our opinions are formed for us before we even have opinions. i've been doing drag professionally for 23 years, and there have been times when even i've had to question my thinking when it came to accepting effeminate men. understandably then, that alot of the prejudice i've experienced as a queen has come from other gay people.

DON"T MESS WITH BILL

i just got home from seeing the opening night of GHETTO SUPERSTAR: THE MAN THAT I AM, the autobiographical new show at JOE"S PUB in the PUBLIC THEATRE starring my friend BILLY PORTER. i was totally not prepared for what i witnessed tonight. i don't know what i expected, but i surely didn't expect to be balling my eyes out upon hearing his amazing story... told masterfully through words, music and BILLY"S powerful, beautiful, soulful voice (the real star of the show). don't get it twisted, i also laughed my ass off as BILLY took us on a journey that's part THE WIZARD OF OZ meets RICHARD PRYOR meets JENNIFER HOLLIDAY. all and all, i never wanted the journey to end. kudos to you my friend! you really let these children have it.

FIFTH AVENUE

when JOAN COLLINS gave me the invite to the party celebrating her new novel, MISFORTUNE'S DAUGHTERS, i recognized the address as the penthouse apartment of DENISE RICH. i've been to countless parties at DENISE'S apartment overlooking CENTRAL PARK. in fact, it was at one of her parties that i met the great DAVID BOWIE.

i met DENISE nine years ago through SAMI McKINNEY, and the three us went on to write a song recorded by MARHA WASH called COME. attending last night's party was, REGIS PHILBIN, that negro woman from THE VIEW, TONY DANZA, NEIL SEDAKA, JOAN & her husband PERCY GIBSON, and about twenty members of the press. me and my friend TIM WALLIS hung out there for about 45 minutes, then we went to THE VILLAGE to get cheeseburgers with no buns.
