cool & the gang

over the weekend, i finally saw "Cool Hand Luke" in it's entirety and immediately added it to my list of all-time favorite films. the film is about hero worship and conformity. on top of that, i think it's probably the sexiest all male non-porn i've ever seen.

of the films i've seen this year, here are my favorites:

1. Hamlet 2
2. Moby Dick
3. You Don't Mess With The Zohan
4. Cool Hand Luke
5. Religulous
6. Sex and the City
7. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
8. Baby Mama
9. Iron Man
10. Mamma Mia

"you're not recording this, are you?"

for a full year prior to Bruce McCoy inviting me to the Janet Jackson concert, i had been on a huge Janet kick... and by huge Janet kick i mean, playing her music everyday and even revisiting her older album cuts. i've always enjoyed her music, but not in the feverish way i've been obsessing over it this past year.

what's emerged from my intense study of her catalog is a greater respect for her as a musician and songwriter. the melodies, the vocal pads & layering, the tone & sweetness of her voice are all qualities that she brings consistently.

even on her latest album "Discipline", on which she didn't write any of the songs, she delivers a solid pop masterpiece. yes, i said masterpiece. don't believe the critics. pop music doesn't get much better than this. her low record sales are due to an ever dwindling demographic who participates in the music buying experience. people between the ages of 11 and 29 buy music. the average age at the concert was 35.

as my admiration for her as a musician grew, i had simultaneously become disenchanted with her public persona and her wimpy handling of "nipplegate". i was disappointed that she hadn't taken the opportunity to publicly let the FCC have it when it came to our culture's double standard over sexuality and violence. whether she planned to expose her breast on the live Super Bowl broadcast or not, the critical beating she took in it's wake was very telling and uncalled for.

when Madonna was extremely criticized for "crossing the line" in her photo book "Sex", she went on the live news program "Nightline" to eloquently set the record straight. in doing so, she educated a whole generation about feminism, gender double standards, and the "free pass" our society has given to violent images. in my opinion, it was her most shining moment.

Janet may have missed the opportunity to become a feminist role model, but she sure let the children have it at the Staples Center September 17th. hit after hit, she was in fine form! that show had to have been over 90 minutes. it was really, truly amazing. i'm still reeling from it over a month later. it was the kind of concert where you stand and dance the whole time. Bruce had awesome floor seats, 7 rows from the stage. when Bruce, John, Tom & i floated out of there, we all felt as if we were officially part of The Rhythm Nation.

THE ZEITGEIST 2

Hi, Ru.
Since you loved and referred everyone to
part 1, I thought you'd be interested (and
excited, like I am) to know part II was
released on Oct. 3rd: ZEITGEIST: ADDENDUM
you can go to moviesfoundonline.com to
watch this 2-hr doc, which has SOLUTIONS
to the first part, after fully explaining the
monetary system and globalization.  It's very
deep, so watch when you have time, of course.
You'll love the "civilized society" proposal/vision.

Live in Love, Dorian.

keeping it real

in the past, i've confessed to becoming obsessed with certain unlikely male sex symbols. Ed O'Neill, Michael Rapaport, Ernie Hudson & Michael Richards have all been the object of my not so secret desire.

here lately, i've added a new hot bitch to my wish list... Jason Segel. ever since i saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" on a flight to JFK, i can't get him out of my friggin' head. i even had a dream about him 2 nights ago. i fuckin' love this sexy MF!

you can look, but don't stare

ok, listen. i know it's very dangerous territory, but after so much traveling and exposure, i felt compelled to dip into it just a little bit over the weekend. every year around this time, i start sleeping 8 to 10 hours and i also find it very difficult to go out and see other people.

yes, 'tis the season where i instinctively want to lower the blinds and hibernate... usually not popping my head out until Groundhog's Day on February 2nd. trouble is, i've got way too much above ground work to do in preparation for "RuPaul's Drag Race", which debuts on February 2nd.

on top of that, recovering from such self-indulgent behavior isn't as easy as it might seem at the onset. during this unholy sabbatical, i usually revisit "the dark night of the soul", which is kinda cute & clever in your 20's, therapeutic in your 30's, but downright deadly once you've pasted 40. the bounce back factor is utterly humiliating because of the loss of so much elasticity. so not worth the ticket price.

so, on this monday morning, i will soldier through my desire for cloud cover and welcome "the sunlight of the spirit" with open arms and a fake smile. because at this stage in the game, i know that "acting as if" is the next best thing to being there. carry on.

city of angels dust

i'm really happy to be back in LA. very disoriented from traveling so much, but i'll be fine in a day or two.

i saw 20 minutes of the first episode of Drag Race yesterday and i started to tremble because it was so effin awesome. i hadn't seen a single frame until then, so i was completely gobsmacked by the gorgeousness. it was like seeing the ultra-sound of my unborn child for the first time. prognosis: it's a boy!...and a girl!

last month, after i saw Delta Werks lipsync "yes sir, i can boogie", i asked DJ Tennessee who recorded it. he said "it's by Baccara and if you love the song, you'll think the video is a riot." he was right. absolutely superb. simply the best. i wonder if the producer ever heard of a little diddy called "don't leave me this way" by Thelma Houston?

omfg

i saw Bill Maher's "Religulous" last night and i loved it. funny as fuck, scary as hell. it didn't uncover the psychological reasons humans gravitate toward superstitious practices , but it does reveal the absurdity of it.

the road to africa

door to door, it took us 35 hours to get back to New York from Johannesburg. that really seems like a cakewalk compared to the 65 hours it took us to get there last week. here's a list of the movies i saw onboard the aircraft:

1. Hancock...i liked it.
2. Sex & The City...my second time. loved. still made me cry.
3. Indiana Jones 4...whatever.
4. Incredible Hulk 2...i hate CGI, but i always love Ed Norton.
5. You Can't Mess...Zohan... very funny, Sandler super sexy. Pop Tarts song in movie.
6. The Third Man...classic Orson Welles, beautifully photographed. Joseph Cotton all wrong.
7. Son of Rambow...cute.
8. What Happens in Vegas...dud, but Goldie Hawn could've made it work.
9. Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo...not funny, but Neil Patrick Harris rules.
10. Baby Mama...very funny.
11. Get Smart...why?
12. The Happening...not.
13. Moby Dick...my first time, watched it twice in one day. effin' awesome! very John-Paul Gaultier porn. great costumes. fantastic story.

soweto, calif.

i don't regret taking the tour of Soweto, but i must admit, driving through shanty town tourist attractions and gawking at poor people isn't one of my favorite things to do. a little too close to my own illustrious beginnings, to be honest.

the whole experience reminded me of the moral behind Preston Sturges' film "Sullivan's Travels". that said, it's hard to walk away from there and not feel eternally grateful for... well, everything.

when pussycats attack

Mike went to the outdoor festival following the Gay Pride Parade and got some scoop on the locals. apparently, the alot of Joburg club heads are doing an inexpensive drug called "Cat'. it is to Crystal Meth what Crack is to Freebase Cocaine. Crack is whack! Cat is where it's at. show me the receipts!

"this house is clean"

we were driving down a road in Pretoria, South Africa when i spotted a flyer advertising local abortions. the flyer boasted several features, but the one that caught my eye was "womb cleaning". now those are two words you rarely see together. i'm currently not pregnant, but i wonder if that's a requirement in order to get the womb cleaning, which i so terribly yearn for.

p control

we flew from New York to Geneva, and then to Doha (on the Persian Gulf between Saudi Arabia & Iran) for a 5 hour layover.

when it came time to board the plane for Johannesburg, we were told we needed more blank pages in our passports to gain entry into South Africa. we each had 2 blank pages, but those pages were designated for "amendments & endorsements". we needed 2 blank pages with the word "visas" written on them.

the next flight to "Joburg" was the following day, so we checked into a hotel and made arrangements with the American Embassy to have more pages added to our passports.

Doha is the largest city in a country called Qatar. it reminded me of Las Vegas, but with Arabic writing on everything. lots of construction, lots of money. my only other trip to the Middle East was 5 years ago when we went to Israel. this would be my first trip to Africa.

"ya bro"

i just finished breakfast at my hotel here in Johannesburg, South Africa. in a few hours, Joelle, Mike Ruiz and i will be taken on a sightseeing tour of "Joburg", Soweto and the surrounding area.

my body still hasn't quite adjusted to traveling half way around the world, which originated one week ago in NYC.

we were invited here to present Starrbooty at 2 film festivals, one in Johannesburg, and the other in Pretoria. last night, i preformed at a nightclub as part of Gay Pride South Africa.
