ladython

we finished shooting on tuesday night. it's now friday morning and i finally feel somewhat recovered. the show is completely and totally off the MF chain... far exceeding our expectations. we thought we were going in there to produce a drag competition reality show, but what happened was a drag competition reality show produced us and itself. the damn thing had a mind of it's own! i am so happy with the results, and i promise you will be too. it premieres in january on LOGO.

the photo above is from an annual LA event called "Best in Drag Show" to benefit "Aid For AIDS".

welcome to LA

it's 4 o'clock in the morning here in West Hollywood and a police helicopter is flying incessantly in circles over my neighborhood. this has been going on for the past 25 minutes, like a giant motorized mosquito that just won't go away. this acoustic assault became synonymous with living in LA in the past quarter century, along with car alarms, which surprisingly, you don't hear so much of anymore. no matter, i'm up anyway. i get to meet my "girls" for the first time this morning.

clues

interesting how energy works. last saturday in New York, i watched the 1985 film "Clue" for the first time. it never occurred to me that i'd be having a lengthy conversation with one of it's stars, Lesley Ann Warren, in Hollywood 5 days later.

boogie wonderland

i just got home from a party at Allee Willis' house. i had fun, but my mind was scattered from waking up at 4:30am and running around all day. i hate not being on top of my game in a social storyline. i felt like i was on a 5 second delay, which made it very hard to focus. i even got lost going to Allee's house... the same house i've visited for the past 9 years.

Tom was there with Ben and they tried to get me to go see "A-M" at Jumbo's, but i told them just didn't have it in me.

other guests included Bud Cort, Lesley Ann Warren, Sally Kellerman, Anita Pointer, Julie Brown, Stephen Bishop, Michael Des Barres, Scott Thompson, Diva Zappa, Franne Golde and Buck Henry.

lay all your love on me

meanwhile, back in LA, i had dinner with Randy Barbato, his dad Joe & Lee Rose at JAR. at the table next to us was Dominic Cooper & Amanda Seyfried, the two young leads from the film "Mamma Mia!". as we were leaving, i told them how much i enjoyed the film, and that i wished the music was louder. Dominic said that at the premiere, Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA) asked for the music to be made louder, too.

Painted Babies at 17

Brett sent me this info on a recent follow-up film to 1995's "Painted Babies", one of my all-time favorite (and sickest) obsessions. when we were filming my old talk show on VH1, we would have this amazing documentary playing on a continuous loop in the dressing room. Michelle Visage and i would quote it so much that the producers asked us to stop because no one in the viewing audience knew what we were talking about. she and i still quote it till this day. i've got to get my hands on this follow-up film

Supermodel does The Wiz

Dear Ru,

Last night I saw a local theatre company (big) perform "The Wiz". Mainly high school kids with some adults as leads at an outdoor theatre in Louisville. Very well done. I'd never seen the play. Filled with very nostalgic New York 1970s references. The play, unlike the film, makes clear that the Emerald City and the city doorman are based on Studio 54. Lots of period jokes about therapists, "valium", and lots of sex references, all edited out of the movie. So 70s---"I found out where my head is", "liberated woman power", "jive turkey", etc. The play suggested that in the 70s New Yorkers main worries were getting into 54 and getting a good therapist and valium----a simpler time.

The Cowardly Lion was played by an approx. 17-18 y.o. black high school guy (theatre student, planning stage career). Ru, he basically played the Lion as "Rupaul the Cowardly Lion." It was hilarious. He had a huge blond dreadlock lion mane wig, was about 6'2", and I swear he based the whole interpretation on "Supermodel does The Wiz." I re-viewed youtube videos of the movie "Wiz" lion's performance to check my theory, and this guy's Lion was nothing like the movie Lion. He played him as a "Supermodel" who was secretly scared of everything, he would strut around but then of course have hissy fits when confronted. He stole the entire show. Could do pratfalls, dance, sing, etc.

I quite believe that your visibility has allowed modern kids to do things like this performance. I doubt that this kid, in 1975-80 or whatever, could have done this "gay" Lion character as a high school actor, he would have had no reference point OR the director would have censored it. I know you know this, but your act and your visibility continues to benefit MANY, many people.

knowing me, knowing you

the only summer film i was really stoked about seeing was Mamma Mia. and yes, i knew the plot was lame, but i didn't care. i was excited for two reasons, Meryl Streep & ABBA.

well, last night i finally saw it. what a blast! i was this close to dancing in the aisles. the movie even had me crying several times. on top of all that, it has one of the gayest scenes in the history of cinema... Meryl singing "Winner Takes It All".

my two complaints are that the music wasn't loud enough and the cinematography sucked. i'm gonna see it again... maybe tonight.

Summer Heat

this clip made it possible for me to decipher lyrics that i was never able to make out before. Donna Summer, Pat Ast, Debralee Scott & Twiggy glamorizing prostitution on a primetime network TV special... ya' gotta love the seventies!

thanks Craig .

**UPDATE**

the Barcelona promoter breached the contract an hour before we were to board the airplane, so i will not be performing there this weekend.

my trip to NYC isn't a total waste of time because i did a "RuPaul's Drag Race" costume fitting with Zaldy yesterday and OMFG. these creations pack more firepower than anything i've ever worn in my whole career. you whore's will not be ready for what i'm bringin'.
