The Best of Soul Train was so sizzlin' hot this past saturday, the most smokin' episode ever. it originally aired february 3, 1979, during the apex of the disco explosion. The Soul Train Dancers were living for the music as if they'd just been freed from prison. these children were - letting - you - have - it.
when they played Amii Stewart "Knock On Wood", it looked like the set was gonna come crashing down from all the gyrating and body thrusting. when they played Gonzales "I Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet", the look of pure ecstasy and unlimited possibilities was on the face of each dancer.
watching this show, it's clear why the disco movement had to be shut down. it tapped into that vast spiritual energy that cannot be controlled. disco threatened people who were afraid of their own connection to universal joy. unfortunately, people feel more comfortable in their pain, like a foster child who longs to be back home with their abusive parent.
remember, you have two choices on this planet...glass half full or glass half empty. both choices are correct, but one choice will bring you joy, and the other choice will bring you pain. keep on dancin', children.
click here to find where The Best of Soul Train is broadcast in your area.
my favorite Donna Summer songs:
1. dim all the lights 2. on the radio 3. i love you 4. our love 5. macarthur park 6. this time i know it's for real 7. love's about to change (C&C version) 8. love is in control 9. the woman in me 10. work that magic 11. lucky 12. dinner with gershwin 13. try me, i know we can make it 14. hot stuff 15. sunset people

"Into The Wild" a fantastic movie, really moving, beautifully shot. i'm always intrigued by people who voluntarily step into the unknown. that's one of the reasons "The Wizard of Oz" is my favorite movie.
"Atonement" a boring, sleep inducing, English soap opera. all potatoes, no meat. at times, the movie felt like an unfunny skit from The Carol Burnett Show. Keira Knightley deserves special mention for her ability to stay so thin. well done, ol' girl.
"I'm Not There" in the art world, when a curator says "this is a very important piece of work", my reaction is always "i'll be the judge of that." it took me many years to develop the self-esteem to trust my own instincts when it came to art. my criteria? how does it make me feel? would i like to bring it home?
whenever people speak of Bob Dylan, it's always in hushed tones, as if to say "this is a very important artist". i say bollocks! he's a poser. Dylan is the epitome of The Great Rock & Roll Hoax. dressed in all black, sunglasses, a filterless cigarette and a guitar... "He's a rebel, sooo cool". "I'm Not There" only perpetuates the pretentious, superficial ideal of his coolness. at least Victoria Beckham has the guts to say i can't sing, i'm not smart, and i'm shallow. i'd rather see a movie about her.

i can't believe it took me this long to finally see Junebug. in 2005, why didn't one of my friends say "Ru, run! don't walk to see this movie, run, run, run!". this makes me question the judgement of all my so-called friends. i mean, how could a movie this amazing have slipped by me? this shit is one of the most important films ever made. totally effin' awesome.
Amy Adams has created a character that will lovingly live in my consciousness forever and ever. through her role in Junebug, she has earned her place among the real motherfuckin' bitches with real motherfuckin' talent... Geraldine Page, Sandy Dennis, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett.
Celia Weston rocks the house in Junebug as well. while we're at it, add Celia Weston to that list of real talent bitches, cause she consistently turns it out in every film she makes. she's the real deal.
you gotta rent Junebug. it is a freakin' masterpiece. Amy Adams is a friggin' genius.
i saw Juno. i did NOT like it. the script is way too precious and clever for it's own good. like "a very special" 2 hour episode of The Gilmore Girls. it did have fantastic actors, though.

it's so effin awesome that my body would choose a time when i'm not working or making personal appearances to catch a cold. another reminder that i'm in sync with a consciousness that guides me on a subconscious level.
it hasn't been that bad, just a runny nose and some required isolation. it feels like my body is downloading new software. i can't even remember the last time i had a cold.
plus, the cold has forced me to sit my black ass down and reflect on the past year... and what a wonderful year it has been! thank you, thank you, thank you!
if i didn't have a cold, how else would i be able to sit through these long ass movies?
yesterday i saw:
"Ratatouille" fun. good message. still disturbing to see even cartoon rats.
"Lust, Caution" OMG! more sensual than "Last Tango in Paris" & "9½ Weeks" combined. amazing lead actress. Ang Lee at his best. i loved this movie.
"Curse of the Golden Flower" not great, but visually stunning. same is true for "Hannibal Rising". both films are carried by the hypnotic beauty and talent of Gong Li.

i spent yesterday completely alone. it was fabulous. i watched academy screeners all day. i got so enthralled that i missed my standing court date. i forgot that Judge Judy comes on at 3pm here in L.A. instead of 4pm like in NYC. i won't make that mistake again.
here's a list of the dvd's i watched:
"Eastern Promises" really good. well paced. Cronenberg doesn't do sexy, even with full nudity from Viggo.
"Margot At The Wedding" fantastic dialog, really solid performances. i really loved this movie, it stayed with me. not for everyone, though. too intellectual for most audiences.
"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" i watched the first 45 minutes and then i shut her DOWN. i hated the protagonist.
"Enchanted" i thought i would shut her down after 15 minutes, but i started watching and fell in love with Amy Adams. fun movie. Susan Sarandon's voice is too compassionate to portray the wicked stepmother. they should have gotten Faye Dunaway, Sharon Stone or Miranda Richardson.
"The Adventures of Mimi" i love Mariah for all the right reasons and for all the wrongs reasons. suffice to say, the dvd satisfied all my reasons for loving her. hot tamale! (note to M, more costumes changes next tour please.)

"Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" hasn't made a dime at the box office. more proof that it's the best film of the year. all i know is that if i really love a movie, it's the kiss of death for it at the box office. run, see it before they yank it from the cineplex.

well, i made it back to L.A. in time for xmas. it's warm, it's sunny, and it's where i wanna be this winter.
i spent the day with my friend Tiko. we watched a screener of "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story", and i friggin' lost my marbles! it is by far my favorite film of the year, and the funniest movie i've seen since "Borat". it's hilarious!!! up there with "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" and "Blazing Saddles". hell, it's as funny as "What's Up Doc?".

i discovered the philosopher Alan Watts earlier this year, and he has subsequently influenced the way i interpret everything. i listen to his lectures on my ipod each night as i fall asleep. i became interested in metaphysics as a teenager, and i thought i'd heard of all the heavyweights in the field, but what do ya know?

Aretha's party felt very much like a family affair. actually, like my own family, which triggered many feelings i hadn't expected. The Queen was gracious and lovely, and treated us like royalty from beginning to end.

i hate sitcoms. i grew up watching the golden era of the sitcom, and i speak the language fluently. i think the genre is sooo used up. so imagine my surprise when i found myself head over heels in love with "The Winner", Rob Corddry's short lived sitcom on Fox. well, not so much of a surprise given how much i dig Rob Corddry from his tenure on The Daily Show. i even bought episodes of "The Winner" on itunes... go figure! i'm such a loser.

the last day on a movie is like the last day of summer camp. you know deep inside that the chances of ever seeing your new friends again are slim to none. you get so close in such a short amount of time and then it's over. it's sad, but such is life. i hate saying goodbye.
after my last shot, the assistant director said aloud the traditional "ladies and gentlemen, that is a picture wrap for rupaul". then, the director brought me flowers and thanked me for being a part of the movie. it's hard to not feel sad when everybody is hugging me and saying goodbye.
i keep reminding myself that i carry a bit of everyone i've ever known with me wherever i go, but that still doesn't stop me from missing them.

i saw The Golden Compass last night and i loved it. Nicole Kidman is deliciously evil in the role of Mrs. Coulter. each of her costumes is better than the last, and the way she uses her body to portray the character is pure genius. at one point, Nicole tries real hard to move her forehead, but to no avail. it is for that reason i'm naming her Best Actress 2007... well, for that reason and for her appearance in The Invasion. her skin is photoshopped in every single frame of The Invasion. sooo totally worth the ticket price. i friggin' love Nicole Kidman! makes me wanna see her other film of 2007, Margot At The Wedding.

Annette showed up one morning after my shift at WKTU, and subsequently every public appearance i made in the New York area for the next ten years. she and her daughter Vanessa were at every taping of The RuPaul Show on VH1, and even trekked out west last june for the Los Angeles premiere of "Starrbooty".
i had never experienced that level of devotion from a fan until i met her, and initially it was startling when she showed me the tattoo of my name on her leg, but eventually i understood it and in doing so learned how to accept my own lovability on a level i had never allowed myself before.
i will always be grateful to you for that, Annette. until we meet again, i will wear your tattoo in my heart.

we spent the past two days shooting at Haulover Beach, just north of Bal Harbour. it was really beautiful out there and filming went relatively smooth, except for a bit of tongue twister dialog i had to deliver. i'm having a blast!
some of the guys and i went roller skating at Gold Coast tonight and had a killer time. Aden & Jordan Jaric are my new best friends on the set. tuesday, the three of us sang the whole Booty Luv cd non-stop in between takes and in the transport van. they're the brand new Falcon discoveries who happen to be a couple in real life.

over the years, the following proverb has helped me to realign my thinking during those many dark nights of the soul.
while standing at the airport watching airplanes take off and fly into the horizon, it looks as though the planes are getting smaller and smaller. are they actually getting smaller? no, it just looks that way from where you're standing.
your ability to change your perception is miraculous.

Art Basel! How I yearn to work it! It is now the single focal point for all trillionaire hedge fund manager's trophy wives shopping fantasies, where every paint splatter on canvas that looks like it should be in Spencer's Gifts at the King of Prussia Mall costs $70 million. This "art" is then used to "decorate" $40 million penthouses, or as one commentator called them "skyboxes for the coming apocalypse". Mike M.

Posh Spice ... "Resentment"
Beyonce powerhouses her way through "Resentment" on her last album, and in doing so, loses the vulnerability that the lyric requires. Posh's lack of vocal hoop jumping actually works in her favor here. she comes across as genuinely hurt by the antagonist in the song.

it was fantastic seeing Bobby Bridges tonight for the first time in 20 years. he was the dj at Weekends Atlanta, where i go-go danced for two and a half years. he was hanging out at Fred's house here in Ft. Lauderdale. Fred was a back-up dancer/singer in my nightclub act back in '86-'87. his stage name was "Trade".
Fred and i went to the Gold Coast Roller Rink for their gay skate night, and then to The Boardwalk for male strippers. we ran into FORMIKA there. we key-keyed and cut up and had a grand ol' time.
