the way it used to be
i watched Jodie Foster in "The Brave One" on my flight to NYC. it was a good movie, well paced and beautifully photographed. i've been away for over a month, so watching a film about a NYC vigilante was an interesting entré back. the film reminded me of the New York City i moved to in the mid-eighties.

tom as chrissy snow
last night, as i was scarfing down a piece of Jon's delicious chocolate b'day cake, i turned to Tom and asked "why is this cake so fucking good?" he looked at me and said "because it was baked in a Dutch oven".

jack ya body
today is my buddy Jack's b'day, but we all celebrated it at Cha Cha Cha on saturday. it was also my buddy Bruce's boyfriend Jon's b'day, which we all celebrated saturday night at their house in The Hills.
in between birthday parties, my sister Renae drove my Mom's old car from San Bernadino to Hollywood for me to take possession. in the fifteen years since my Mom passed, every one of my sisters has owned her '79 Volvo at one time or another. now it's my turn. i'm gonna trick it out & jack it up with some rims and a bitching sound system. Mom would get a kick out of that.

g-girls
the first thing i watched on my new 50" plasma TV was the Golden Girls. i chose one of my favorite episodes where Dorothy mistakenly asked a priest over for a "dinner date". when she comes out and sees his priest's collar she says "please tell me that's a nehru jacket you're wearing". moments later, and both still embarrassed about the misunderstanding, he says "well, you look nice Dorothy" and she says "are you kidding? i look like the mother of a Solid Gold dancer". hi-la-ri-ous!
well, i guess you gotta know what a nehru jacket is, and what a Solid Gold dancer is.

hostess jazzmun of club cobra
Cleo and i managed to completely jam-pack thursday night with the kind of decadent delights only L. to the A. has to offer.
we started with country line dancing at Oil Can Harry's (no mechanical bull for me with my fickle back), then Jumbo's Clown Room for real girl strippers (our favorite "A.M." danced her sweet patootie off), and then we topped off the night at Club Cobra in North Hollywood (Shedonna dressed as "Ginger" lip-synced all the Spice Girls parts on Spice Up Your Life & Say You'll Be There). we narrowly missed a late night cheeseburger at Bob's Big Boy (thankfully coming to our senses in the parking lot of the Toluca Lake landmark).
after a year of having Cleo back in The States, she's returning to Sydney. i'm gonna miss her zest for life and culture and laughter, but i'm gonna really miss our 10 hour movie marathons the most. well, it just means i'll have to get my ass to Oz sooner rather than later. love ya heaps.

i am not my body
i threw my back out last week, so i decided abdominal strengthening via pilates was the quick fix. well, that only exacerbated the back-story and i've been out of commission for a couple of days...i.e., no country line dancing or gay roller skating... ugggh!
i had an acid flashback watching this 1986 clip of aerobics pioneer Joanie Greggains. i religiously watched her TV show every morning after my go-go dancing shift at Weekends Disco in Atlanta. she helped me to "come down" off of whatever i had taken to get me through the night. i eventually got into aerobics in 1991, and during every class i took, i had Joanie Greggains on my mind.

her royal lady-magic
i've worshipped at the feet of Michelle Visage ever since i met her in 1990. she is truly a gay man trapped in a woman's body if ever there was one. i photoshopped this 1987 promo picture of Visage about five years ago and thought you might get a kick out of spooking what i changed. click here to visit a site totally devoted to her lady-magic called Visage Therapy.

Leviticus 20:13 or 18:22?
i can never remember which bible passage Sir Ian rips, and these conflicting accounts don't help me.
1.) Sir Ian McKellen is so offended by the Bible’s anti-gay stance he makes a point of ripping out the relevant page every time he stays in a hotel room. He finds it difficult to contain his outrage at the contents of Leviticus 20:13 when he spots the book in hotels. McKellen says, “It’s the one thing I find difficult to defend but do go on doing.” The Leviticus 20:13 passage reads: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.”
2.) Sir Ian took a puff of a Marlboro Light and smiled like a serene party host. ''I can't wait to get into bed,'' he said. One aspect of his hotel room already felt like home: he had ripped the anti-gay passage Leviticus 18:22 from the Gideon Bible, a ritual that lets him sleep more soundly.

daddy bday
i drove down to San Diego saturday morning because my sister threw my pops a birthday party for his 79th. i saw my ex-brother in law Laurence for the first time in 15 years, and Junebug from across the street for the first time since 1971. that was the year i smoked my first joint, which had been stolen from Junebug by his brother Alvin.
we played The List, Spotlight and Celebrity, and ate really fattening foods all day. i can't believe all the crap i put into my body. we laughed alot and had big fun, but you better believe after traffic died down, i hightailed it back to L.A. quick, fast and in a hurry. being in the house i grew up in still propels me into an emotional loop that years of therapy hasn't yet unraveled.

hot lips
after our writing session yesterday, Bunny and i went to the Whole Foods on Fairfax for a late lunch. we were hoping to score a rare sighting of Angelyne, but we bumped into Sally Kellerman at the salad bar instead. as i sprinkled salad dressing on my creation, Kellerman stood next to me. i couldn't resist saying in my deepest Sally Kellerman voice "you're no doubt looking for the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing". she smiled as if to say 'if i had a nickel for every idiot who's ever said that to me...'

Five Questions For RuPaul
Camp queen -- and everyone's favorite supermodel -- tackles the tough questions.
Who will play you in the film version of your life story? Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (sitting on one another's shoulders, of course)
The perfect song to have sex to is: Mike Oldfield's “Tubular Bells,” the theme from The Exorcist.
When I’m most stressed out, I… Compulsively key cars and make prank phone calls.
Childhood crush: Jesus. The Bible renderings of him on the cross made me tingle down there.
What will it say on your tombstone? “This is not RuPaul’s final resting place. He was cremated and sprinkled over a chicken caesar salad.”
RuPaul's new film, Starrbooty, is now available on DVD.

Director Mike Ruiz’s showcase of legendary drag performer RuPaul recalls the best of John Waters, David Lynch, or even Andy Warhol. Its political incorrectness stems not from a juvenile desire to shock, but from an exploration of race, gender, sexuality, and the ways we perceive them. As Special Agent Starrbooty, RuPaul catwalks away with the most purely enjoyable film of 2007.

Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" has been covered over a hundred times by everyone from David Bowie to Cher, but the definitive version still belongs to Amii Stewart, which peaked at number one in 1979. in my opinion, it's the best remake of a song ever recorded and it still holds water today.
...and yes! done and done.

Word is from Las Vegas insider Robin Leach that Cher is going to announce her Las Vegas shows this month in New York on a string of popular TV shows.
First I was told to “expect the official confirmation announcement any moment now” from Cher about her new upcoming string of shows at the Caesars Palace Colosseum. Then I was told, “Keep an eye on Jan. 28 or sometime that last week of the month.”
Either way, Cher is in charge of breaking the news herself and she’s planning to do it with a big splash in New York rather than Vegas!
Watch for her 24-hour media day of back-to-back appearances on Good Morning America, The Today Show, plus David Letterman and Regis & Kelly to announce the new run starting either the last week of April or the first week of May at Celine Dion’s former home.
Bette Midler will be appearing there in the meantime and I’ve learned “her ticket sales are going through the roof—and far better than anybody dared dream possible. She’s a sell out and going at the same pace as Celine!”
Apparently, Cher plans to stop in Vegas en route home to Hollywood after New York to meet all members of the Vegas media community and reveal further details of her spectacular. Tickets for Cher’s show should go on sale by Feb. 1 at the latest!
i stumbled across my personal astrology chart completely by accident and was surprised it was so accurate, even though they listed my time of birth 66 minutes earlier than it actually was... or maybe they know something i don't.

hot summer night
one hot Atlanta night in 1979, i saw Crystal LaBeija at Numbers lip-syncing "bad girls". i have never seen anyone top Crystal's performance of that song, not even Donna Summer. coming in at a close second would be Liza (giving you all that i got) Minnelli. watch her turn it out and make it her own.

suzi lane
Dear Ru, Bunny mentioned in her blog that you loaned her this song for use at Disco Tea. Do you recall playing this song for me in your hotel room in Chicago in October 2004? This song is supernatural. It is bigger than any of us. Numbers and The Saint on Cheshire Bridge Road, late night 1983...a queen dancing in a floor-length fur coat & cowboy hat.. Mike M.
MM, yes and yes. Suzi Lane was one of the singers Giorgio Moroder produced after his enormous success with Donna Summer. the album was called Ooh La La. the title track was also a disco hit. i bought a cd of the album at Medium Rare in San Francisco.

Perhaps you didn't realize that, in addition to dusting your screen from the outside, it's necessary to clean it from the inside where you normally can't wipe. who's the boss?
what if every night before you went to bed, you were given the opportunity to choose your dream experience for that night with the guarantee that when you awoke in the morning, you'd be unchanged, unhurt and given another opportunity to choose again the next night?
what if there was a device placed in your head that would make you forget you were dreaming until you woke up? what if the dream actually took place in the course of an afternoon nap, but seemed like a lifetime?
if this were really true, how differently would you conduct your self? how fearless would you be?

family drama
strangely, all of the screeners i watched in the past 2 days had something to do with family conflict. is there any other kind? here's the list:
"before the devil knows you're dead" really good. Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Sidney Lumet directed. i guess i can finally forgive Lumet for fucking up "the wiz".
"the savages" another Phillip Seymour Hoffman film. it didn't suck, whatever.
"dan in real life" i couldn't get past the premise, which is so implausible and contrived that i shut it down after 40 minutes. don't get me wrong, i love implausible and contrived, but they couldn't pull it off.
"lars and the real girl" i really enjoyed this movie. Ryan Gosling has got the goods. he has an amazing inner dialog.
"once" shut down after 30 minutes. i was just not in the mood.
'the bucket list" Lifetime, television for women... starring two old geezers. i didn't shut it down. Nicholson has some funny lines.
