for some odd reason, the concept of marriage has been popping up alot in my consciousness over the past few days. first, it was the latest court rulings to ban gay marriage. then yesterday, 30 minutes after i settled into my hotel room, a wedding ceremony began one story below my balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean. and today, on the way back from my "sound check", i noticed the world famous Madonna Inn, the honeymoon haven where newlyweds have flocked to for decades.
as i watched the ceremony below my balcony, i began to cry as i do at all weddings. i cried because of the beautiful fairytale promise of true love & devotion that we all grew up believing in. the idea that there is one person out there for each of us if we are lucky enough to find them. (place cynical joke here)
having said that, i feel all marriage should be banned as a legal binding contract, gay or straight, and replaced with a legal partnership contract that two or three or four hundred adults can enter into as a way of combining assets, sharing tax & health benefits, and whatever else comes with tying the knot.
traditional marriage as a legal binding contract is such an archaic idea, i'm surprised any forward thinking person would want to do it in the first place. sure, i can understand wanting to fulfill some fairytale fantasy, but don't get that mishegas mixed up with reality. the reality being that modern life requires legal partnerships for some people.
people who were raised on religious fairytales believe the proof of true devotion is to marry someone. wake up and smell the statistics sleeping beauty! the proof of true devotion is to remain committed to that person through thick and thin! you don't need a wedding for that... you just need patience and several hundred years. how many people who have been married can boast that true show of devotion?
